The aim at North Lancing is to provide a welcoming, happy, safe and stimulating environment for children to learn; an environment in which everyone is valued, and all achievements are celebrated.
We believe a happy child is a successful one. We intend that all children should enjoy their learning, achieve their potential and become independent, life-long learners.
We aim to encourage each child to practice the five core values of our school: Independence, collaboration, resilience and perseverance whilst developing the fifth core value, their own unique ‘individuality.’
Our curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils in preparation for the opportunities and experiences of adult life.
North Lancing provides a highly inclusive environment where learners enjoy their education. We carefully ensure that all children have equal opportunities and there is access for all (Equality Act 2010). Planning is regularly refreshed by the teachers to ensure that it is current and that the curriculum is inclusive, meeting the needs of all children. (Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014). Pupils at all levels are helped to achieve their potential. Those who are most able are challenged, encouraged to expand their skills and knowledge through varied curriculum opportunities. Those who find learning more difficult are given targeted support to embed skills, to develop at their own pace and to learn in a style that best suits their individual needs. As we design and refresh our curriculum,
North Lancing’s focus on curriculum development is always carefully designed to ensure coverage and progression. It provides pupils with memorable experiences, in addition to diverse and rich opportunities from which children can learn and develop a range of transferable skills. A primary focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations, engender a sense of personal pride in achievement, provide a purpose and relevance for learning and ultimately to help every student to find strengths and interests.
Sport has a high profile at North Lancing, and pupils are introduced to a huge variety of activities. Traditional sports such as netball and football are complimented by cricket, golf, table tennis, running, athletics, tag rugby, karate, dance, gymnastics, fencing, cheerleading, stoolball and seasonal weekly swimming sessions. Giving sport a focus across North Lancing has engaged many children including children with SEN.
The school also excels in the arts – providing quality opportunities for students to thrive creatively. An art gallery corridor allows pupils to celebrate artistic achievement, weekly taught music lessons, opportunities to perform in plays and daily creative opportunities in the curriculum all lead to a creative, stimulating learning environment.
North Lancing provides the full core offer of extended school provision. To promote physical health and wellbeing, a range of clubs gives learners an opportunity to access a wide variety of clubs after school hours and during lunch times. From yoga, fitness and rambling to chess, Lego and knitting – there is a club for every interest.
Subject leaders play an important part in the success of the curriculum by leading a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review. The innovative practice across North Lancing provides a strong foundation and opportunities for children to work in teams and develop social skills both indoors and out. The curriculum design ensures that the needs of individual and small groups of children can be met within the environment of high quality teaching, supported by targeted, proven interventions where appropriate. In this way it can be seen to impact in a very positive way on pupil outcomes. Enjoyment of the curriculum promotes achievement, confidence and good behaviour. Children feel safe to try new things. High quality visits and visitors into North Lancing are also well designed to enhance the curriculum.
