North Lancing Primary School

Intent

Our aim at North Lancing Primary is to encourage pupils to develop an appreciation and understanding of the past through range of primary and secondary sources.

Our historians will also be able to explain clearly how these sources give us an insight about how people around the world used to live and how these interpretations may differ.

 Pupils will be taught to make links between these areas of learning, with the aim of developing engaged, motivated and curious learners that can reflect on the past and make meaningful links to the present day.

Our historians will be given a variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom where appropriate to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their understanding.

Our History curriculum has been designed to cover all of the skills, knowledge and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum.

Implementation

 At North Lancing Primary School we ensure that learning is progressive and continuously building on from prior knowledge.

Our curriculum is built around our school’s values of collaboration, independence, perseverance, resilience and individuality.

In history we focus on these key strands:

• Substantive concepts – This is the historical facts we teach

• Disciplinary concepts – This is how we make use of the facts that are learned

• Historical enquiry – Developing knowledge and understanding by asking questions about the past and using sources as evidence to develop an informed argument or interpretation.

• Chronological awareness – a way that follows the order in which a series of events happened:

We will encourage pupils to develop an appreciation and understanding of the past, evaluating a range of primary and secondary sources.

Pupils will be taught to make links between these areas of learning, with the aim of developing engaged, motivated and curious learners that can reflect on the past and make meaningful links to the present day.

To ensure that pupils develop a secure knowledge that they can build on, our History curriculum is organised to build on the skills, knowledge and vocabulary that is taught in a sequential way through-

Chronological Understanding;

Historical Understanding;

Historical Enquiry;

Interpretations of History; Organisation and Communication

 We ensure that pupils are always building on prior knowledge.

History is delivered through subject specific teaching. Where appropriate, meaningful links with other subjects are made which will strengthen connections and understanding for pupils.

All teaching and learning will start by taking account of prior knowledge.

Children will be introduced to subject-specific vocabulary, knowledge and skills relevant to the learning to allow them to integrate new knowledge and make connections.

Impact

Children will demonstrate they are enquiring learners who can ask questions and can make suggestions about where to find the evidence to answer the question. Throughout their topic, children will be provided with opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through talk and, where appropriate, an endpoint task to demonstrate their knowledge.

Pupil voice will show that pupils are confident and able to talk about what they have learnt in history using subject specific vocabulary.

Pupil voice also demonstrates that pupils enjoy history and are able to recall their learning over time.

 Pupils work demonstrates that history is taught at an age appropriate standard across each year group with opportunities planned in for pupils working at greater depth.

 Work produced is of good quality and demonstrates pupils are acquiring knowledge, skills and vocabulary in an appropriate sequence.
